Wk 1 Post 4 - Film Genre Research

                                                               The Fault in our stars

Cinematography:

The opening scene uses a mix of close ups and mid shots to focus on Hazel’s expressions and environment. The close ups emphasize her emotions, making the audience feel more connected to her. The use of mid shots helps to establish the setting, showing her in different locations like the hospital and her home.

Editing techniques:

The editing is relatively calm, matching the reflective and somewhat somber tone of Hazel’s narration. The transitions are smooth, helping to convey the passage of time and the continuity of her thoughts. This editing style sets a contemplative mood, allowing viewers to absorb Hazel’s story.

Sound Techniques:

The opening scene has a soft soundtrack that plays behind Hazel’s narration. This enhances the emotional impact of her words. The sound of her voice is clear and almost intimate, which draws the audience into her perspective. The combination of music and dialogue helps establish the tone and mood of the film right from the start.

Mise-en-scene:

The lighting in the opening scene is natural and somewhat subdued. This reflects the realistic and grounded nature of the story. Hazel’s wardrobe and make-up are simple and basic. This emphasizes her character's down-to-earth personality. The settings, including her house and the hospital, are depicted with much attention to detail. Which adds authenticity to the narrative.

Production and distribution:

“The Fault in Our Stars” was directed by Josh Boone and produced by Fox 2000 Pictures, Temple Hill Entertainment, and TSG Entertainment. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox. The film’s budget was $12 million and grossed over $307 million worldwide.

Credits:

The opening credits are simple and elegant, they used a clean font with minimal animation. The colors are muted which match the film's overall aesthetic. This simplicity helps the audience focus on the narrator's words.

Awards and Nominations:

The film recieved several awards and nominations, including the MTV movie award for movie of the year. It was praised for its performances, particularly Shailene Woodley's portrayal of Hazel, and its adaptation on Josh Green’s Novel.

Personal Choice for analysis:

I chose this movie because it is the same genre that me and my partner have chosen for our 8-week film project. Another reason is because I have never seen this movie before, and I was interested in seeing what it was about. When I watch a movie, I have never seen, it is easier for me to Analyse it because I am more aware and pay more attention to every detail that is happening on screen.
